Our furry electronic friend’s Octavcat have resurfaced with a nice little remix competition. You can now download all the parts from their gorgeous Dumming Up album (think the plinky plonky childlike naivete of Plone mixed with Plaid‘s ear for lush melodies) and mess with them to your heart’s content. Then when all the beast tracks have been selected they will have videos made for each winner and the results released on DVD. Not too shabby.

Australian’s The Bang Gang are over in the UK to promote their new Modular released mix Light, Sound, Dance a 2CD romp through 69 thoroughly blog friendly tracks. If you’ve yet to grab it then rush out now and do so, it’s been getting well deserved hype from all sorts and really is a perfect snapshot of now and an ex cellent candidate for a 2007 musical time capsule.

They’ve kept this party on the downlow but it still goes without saying that the Showrooms is gonna be rammed and if you’re even going to have a chance of getting in you’ll need to click on the flyer above and RSVP.

And so you can look good whilst jumping up and down on the Showroom’s Saturday Night Fever style dancefloor Modular have given us a very fine little pack including a Modular tote bag, Bang Gang T-shirt, badges and stickers. If you want to get hold of all this then email us the answer to the following question before next Wednesday:

Q: Which of the following is one of the Bang Gang Deejays? Is it Ajax, Hercules or Ulysees

If you want more check out their Podcasts and their own excellent Bag Raiders label. You can buy the Light, SOund, Dance CD from the Modshop.

Oh My Gosh!

It’s utterly terrifying how much of a blur the past ten years have been, thinking back to the mid nineties I seem to remember being vaguely optimistic about the state of this country, the world, music and even my own future. My how things change, anyway before I sink into a morbid state of depression and spend the rest of the afternoon listening to Sisters Of Mercy records it’s worth bearing in mind that it’s not all doom and gloom and not everyone wasted the past decade.

Evidence for this more optimistic take on life comes in the rather natty shape of Well Deep a new compilation celebrating 10 years of Big Dada that dropped through the letterbox today, from it’s humble origins as a spin off of Ninja Tune, the label has in my eyes (and ears) gone onto eclipse it’s big daddy releasing some of the best leftfield music of the past few years.

Over 2CDs (or DVD) and 31 tracks it charts the labels progress from it’s gritty UK origins and roster of homegrown operators such as Roots Manuva, New Flesh and the brilliantly off-the-wall Infinite Livez to it’s current global lineup that has introduced the wider world to the likes of Diplo, Spank Rock and TTC.

And because we liked it so much we pestered the label for a couple of copies to give away as prizes. To win a copy email us the answer to this question before Tuesday (22nd) Midday and we’ll randomly select a couple of winners from the right answers:

Q: Mike Ladd’s Infesticons were the arch enemies of which other fictional high-rolling group?

Whilst you’re at it check the debut album, Breaking Kayfabe from new signing Cadence Weapon as well, next level shit as kids in furry kangols are wont to say.

Stealthy buggers DC, they might not clock up the headlines like some other labels but over the last few years they’ve steadily put out beautifully packaged release after release, ranging from the stop/start electronic hip-hop of Kelpe or Clause 4 to The Emperor Machine‘s retro-fitted space disco without a single drop in quality. In fact looking back at their last 15 or so releases it’s fair to say they’ve probably released some of our favourite records in recent years.

Anyway the reason for this epiphany is the news that the long awaited debut album by The Oscillation (formerly The Orichalc Phase) is in the bag and ready to drop next week. Dreamy, droning soundscapes that are drowning in reverb are very much the order of the day, a kind of soundclash between The Velvet Underground and Kevin Shields at the Radiophonic Workshop, which is of course a very good thing.

To give you a taster here are the videos for Head Hang Low off the new album and previous releases Violations and Respond In Silence, or head over to DC’s site where if you sign up to their mailing list you can download a free MP3 of the Dub mix of Violations.

Head Hang Low – Directed by Dan Rutley

Violations – Directed by Julian Hand

Respond In Silence – Directed by Julian Hand

We’ve also bagged a couple of copies of the recent Death Before Distemper compilation the label put out, which includes tracks from the likes of Padded Cell, The Emperor Machine, Depth Charge, White Light Circus. To be in with a chance to win one simply email us before Friday (12th) with the answer to this question:

DC Recordings was founded by which multi-moniker’ed producer?

And finally on a similar vein to The Oscillation, if you liked what you heard and fancy taking a trip further down the rabbit hole we can heartily recommend that you check out the insanely good Knives Ov Resistance, (whose line-up includes The Oscillation’s Demian Castellanos) who released the mind bending Prisca Sapientia album at the start of this year, a record that no decent music collection should be without.
