Although it feels slightly redundant bigging up the latest offering from Modular, the label could probably release the next Levellers album and would soon have the fashionistas walking around in distressed jumpers, dragging a mangy looking dog behind them, new signing The Whitest Boy Alive are still well worth investigating.
Fronted by Erlend Øye (Kings of Convenience), they have developed over the past few years from being a solely electronic project into a fully fledged live band. They self released their debut album Dreams last year to much acclaim and it is this release that has been picked up for re-release by Modular.
The band are playing only their second UK gig this Tuesday (Oct 9th) at the Hoxton Bar & Kitchen, there are no advance tickets for this so you’ll just have to get their unfashionably early or blag your way onto the guestlist as this one is going to be busy, busy, busy.
If you like what you hear you could also do a lot worse then to dig out Erland’s 2003 solo set Unrest, an excellent and much underated collection of thoughtfull electro pop recorded with the likes of Morgan Geist, Prefuse 73 and Schneider TM.
Keeping with Modular, their weekly night at the Ditch continues to pack them in and this week they’ve got Martelo and Sheffield’s brilliant Toddla T guesting, always a laugh and with a crowd that are surprisingly not too up themselves, if you’re looking for a sure bet on Friday, check it out.
